Phones and Data and Pictures, Oh My

I don't text, I don't Twitter,I don't surf the net or send photos through it. My current phone is like four years old, thus it is a dinosaur, something Edison could have used to get ahold of Watson in the other room.
-

All that will change next month when the shackles and chains come off and I am out of my Sprint Contract with all it's dead zones and frustrations, and onto a hopefully better telephone experience.
-
The world is mine. Free to choose. Free.

-
Freedom has it's price for sure. Not sure if I want to spring for all the bells and whistles. Not sure if I'll ever really want to send tweets, though it would come handy in a revolution.
Time to start shopping around.

Ahh. Fortunately a telecom company flunkie is among your legion of followers. An unsolicted observation? All cell phones suck. The trick is finding a carrier that sucks less.

I had been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 20th century about a year ago when I discovered that the best way to talk with a teenager was via texting. Oh, and by getting an unlimited plan I was free to get a steady stream of jokes and...uh...tasteful picures forwarded to me by my friends and co-workers. Best $10 a month I spend, I tell ya.

I am now progressing into the realm of the "high tech redneck," and am proud to say I've now entered the 21st century on my own (!) with a smart phone. Crackberry, indeed! Nice, since I'm on the road all day, loaded with features I'll never use, and has great call quality, which is the point of a mobile phone, no?

I should also mention that the aforementioned fwd'd pix are MUCH larger now, which is a plus.

I'm sure you'll compare features vs. price when you shop. Carriers LOVE fresh meat and will do whatever they can to suck someone into a new contract. But before you sign, take a poll of your closest associates and see who is where...cell to cell calls within the same carrier are free, and that will allow you to purchase a cheaper package of minutes if you stay off the landlines.

I'm sure you know which carrier I use. I picked it not only for the small employee discount, but because after trying everyone else, it seemed to suck less. And that made all the difference.

Good luck, Miss Phelps. Another time vampire awaits you in the palm of your hand!

Pretty much settled on Verizon. Not sure if I should handle the big switch on line or at a store. Been getting conflicting advice. Probably no blackberry for me. I'm not buying a data plan. I spend too much time on computers already.

A few perks with doing it online, such as no activation fee, free shipping, and sometimes better pricing on the actual handheld. But I'm kind of old school...I prefer the human touch, and the immediate gratification of having my stupid questions answered on the spot. Plus, the union member mentality encourages keeping someone working locally in a storefront. I go to the one near Starbucks in Hermitage since it's an actual company store. The local ones are independant contractors, and while they offer the same products, I feel better going right to the mothership since it's one less link in the identity theft food chain.

Careful on which handset you pick, because a lot are now requiring even a minimal data plan. Total profit-driven bs, imho, but it is what it is. Put on your used car salesman hat and see what happens when you B McC the rep...and I encourage you to wait a week or two more if you're not in a rip. End of the month is sales quota time, and you never know what you may be able to extort from the newbie in the entry-level job.
